Printers, multi-function
copiers, ink jets...what do I need? Many
businesses make their purchase decisions on the upfront cost of the
printer and go no further. Hey, if you can get an ink jet for under $80
or less why not? I'll tell you why not; the cost of replacement
cartridges can easily exceed the price you paid for the printer! most
ink jet printers come with a black and colour cartridge along with the
printer. When you go to replace the cartridges think about replacing the
printer! Replace the printer?? But I've only ran through one set of
cartridges!! Here, let me show you. I'll use a Lexmark Z715 for example.
This printer is currently selling (09-15-2005 Lexmark.ca) for around
$70.00. The cartridges for this printer are approximately $39.99 for
black and $49.99 for colour. That's $90.00 vs. the $70.00 that you paid
for the printer plus two cartridges. Now, in some cases the ink/toner
provided with a new printer may be a "starter" cartridge and therefore
not be full capacity, but you see where I'm going.
The same holds true for laser printers and multi-function machines.
Typically the lower the upfront cost, the higher the backend cost. We
did some research for a client of ours who employs numerous
multi-function copiers. They were very interested in the low cost/great
options that come with Brother's new
MFC7820N (click for
details). In addition to the lower upfront cost, this unit now adds
built-in network capability. Based on a usage of 40,000 pages per year,
assuming a 3-year lifespan for the unit and the addition of a 3-year
onsite warranty we compared the MFC7820N to the more expensive MFC8440.
i know what you're thinking; "Yeah but the MFC7820n is a network
printer!". You're absolutely right, however, let's have a look at the
numbers based on Brother Canada's Web Site pricing:

As you can see from the comparison there's lots of room to buy an external print server
if you are set on this option. In addition to saving your company on
annual consumables costs the MFC8440 is also more solidly built to last.
